Social Justice and Peace

Social Justice and Peace Mission:
The Social Justice & Peace Commission is charged with the important task of educating the Parish in the teachings of the church on social justice and in the methods that work to achieve this goal. The commission seeks to draw attention to particular problems of social justice and peace within the parish as well as addressing other social issues of wider concern. The responsibilities of the commission include investigating and coordinating the Parish response to problems of social justice on the local, national and global levels, especially regarding the needs of the poor, the sick, the oppressed and the imprisoned. Members participate in a variety of activities in the form of projects on a monthly and seasonal period as depicted below:

Projects & Activities:
Monthly Food Cupboard:
Mission:
Members of the Parish support the Brewer Ecumenical Food Cupboard, Members are responsible for collecting, sorting and transporting food items donated by the Parish on the first Sunday of each month. These food items are used to restock the shelves. Once a month, members staff the Cupboard for distribution of the food items to those in need. Members volunteer in various capacities such as sorters, transporters, food slip distributors and food cupboard workers.
Monthly Soup Kitchen:
Mission:
Members of the Parish volunteer as shoppers, cooks, helpers, servers & cleaners on the first Friday of each month at the Dorothy Day Soup Kitchen located in the Salvation Army building. Members shop for the necessary foods, prepare, cook and serve the noon meal to needy guests. Members also participate in the clean-up following the meal.
